I am a Professor of Economics and International Economics at Technische Hochschule Köln (TH Köln). I have been awarded the Jean Monnet Chair “Europe in the Global Economy” at TH Köln (2014-17 Erasmus+ financed) by the European Union. At TH Köln I also direct the Institute of Global Business and Society. At Maastricht University’s Maastricht School of Management I hold a position as Associate Professor and are a fellow of the Graduate School of Business and Economies at Maastricht University.
I have also been a visiting researcher at various institution such as the Research Department of the International Monetary Fund, the Centre for Contemporary Europe Research Centre at the University of Melbourne, and the Global Business Institute at New York University. I have published extensively in leading international journals like the Journal of International Money and Finance, the Journal of Banking and Finance, the Journal of Financial Stability, Economic Inquiry and Applied Economics. As an occasional blogger, I have contributed commentaries to outlets like the LSE-EUROPP Blog and The Conversation. I am the author and editor of several books, including co-edited volumes on “World Trade after the Uruguay Round”, published by Routledge in 1996, and Private Sector Development in an Emerging World. Inclusive Policies and Strategies for the Formal and Informal Economy, published by De Gruyter in 2024. My most recent monograph “Understanding the New Global Economy. A European Perspective” has been published by Routledge in 2022 and explores the state and dynamics of the economic (de-)globalization.
My major research interests are:
- International financial integration, especially global and European banking
- European (monetary) integration
- International trade and investment
- (The limits of) global governance
- Green and inclusive industrial policy
I also have a strong interest in promoting internationalization of higher education and in innovation in academic teaching.
